When I was a young student, I heard of Lao Tzu from teachers and my class mates. All spoke of him with great reverence.

To be honest, when I was younger, I did not understand his teachings. As I grew older, as I experience more of life, I began to resonate with his words of wisdom.

Whenever I come across his quotes, whether in the physical world or on the Internet, I would ponder. And always I find myself getting a deeper understanding of life and the universe.

Who is Lao Tzu?

Lao Tzu was a philosopher and founder of Taoism. Some said he lived in 6th century, BCE at the same time as Confucius. Some historians disagreed and said he lived during the period of the Warring States; that is 4th century, BCE.

Regardless of when he lived, it cannot be denied that this is a great man who have lived and shared his knowledge and wisdom to the world. Even today, his words bring much guidance to many.

He wrote the Tao Te Ching, which is one of the most significant treatises in Chinese cosmonogony. He explain his ideas with paradoxes, analogies and rhymes. I suppose this could be the reason the younger me was unable to grasp the meanings of his words until later in life.

His teachings and the book, Tao Te Ching, leads students to return to their natural state. He encourages being in harmony with Tao, which is the source of all existence.

Just an interesting note – Lao Tzu is an honorific title. It is not the name of this teacher. The Chinese words – Lao Tzu – means old man or old teacher. This was a respectful and endearing term for this marvelous man.

  1. I enjoy learning the history of the person behind the quote. This quote really hits home as this is what I have been trying to do for a long time. Sometimes letting go of yourself and what is comfortable is hard and to be able to become to what you want to be, takes that change along with stepping out of your comfort zone.

    1. Glad you enjoyed this quote, Dena. And learning more about Lao Tzu. I enjoyed researching and remembering this wonderful sage. He has so many wise sayings. I will feature more of them soon.

I agree with you. It is hard to let go of who we are. It is such a comfortable place to be. And it takes a lot of courage to step out of that comfort zone, and become more. Definitely worth the transformation.
