What is a Double Rainbow?
Double rainbows are nature’s way of creating a dazzling encore.
When sunlight encounters water droplets in the atmosphere, it refracts (bends), forming the familiar, vibrant arc of a rainbow.
But sometimes, the light takes an extra spin within the droplets, creating a fainter, outer rainbow – the double rainbow!
The Meaning of Double Rainbows in Different Cultures
For centuries, double rainbows have captured the imagination and sparked wonder in cultures around the world. Here are some of the beautiful meanings they hold:
- Irish Culture: Double rainbows are synonymous with good luck. Legend has it, a pot of gold awaits at the end of the rainbow!
- Native American Culture: A symbol of hope, reminding us that the Great Spirit watches over us, and brighter days are on the horizon.
- Chinese Culture: Double rainbows represent dreams coming true. A sign that the universe is listening to your intentions and desires!
- Japanese Culture: A symbol of peace and harmony in the world.
- Thai Culture: In Thailand, double rainbows are seen as a sign of good karma and blessings from the spirits. It’s believed that witnessing a double rainbow signifies that your positive actions and meditations are being acknowledged by the divine.
- Indonesian Culture: Some parts of Indonesia associate double rainbows with the appearance of a powerful female deity associated with water and rainbows. Seeing a double rainbow is considered a message of hope, renewal, and the cleansing power of the divine feminine.
The Scientific Explanation for Double Rainbows
While the cultural interpretations are inspiring, there’s a fascinating scientific reason behind double rainbows. It all boils down to light refraction within water droplets.
When sunlight hits a droplet at a specific angle, it bends twice, creating the two rainbows we see.
My Personal Experiences with Double Rainbows
Double rainbows hold a special place in my heart. I vividly remember seeing my first one as a child, mesmerized by the vibrant colors and feeling a surge of pure joy. It sparked a sense of wonder and a belief in magic that I carry with me to this day.
More recently, after a period of personal challenges, I encountered a double rainbow.
I had battled with cancer for years. And finally won.
Even then, as a cancer survivor, there are still challenges. I will be monitored by my doctors for the next few years. This involved lots of scans, tests and follow-up medical appointments and reviews. It is exhausting. And sometimes, it can get depressing.
Then one day, while returning home from one such medical appointment at the hospital, I chanced upon this double rainbow.
I was walking from the lift to my home, along the common corridor. As I headed towards the door, I glanced at the sky above the apartment buildings.
Lo and behold, I saw a rainbow! At first, I thought it was just one rainbow. Quickly, I whipped out my phone and took a few photos. As I did, I began to realize it was a double rainbow!
It was a magical moment! A rare phennomenon!
It felt like a powerful message from the universe, a reminder to stay positive and trust that brighter days were ahead. This experience solidified my belief in the connection between our inner world and the external world – a core principle of our meditation practice.
