Every year, before the new lunar year, my family and I would be busy doing spring cleaning. All dust would be swept away. All dirt would be wiped away. And the final touch to clean our home on a physical and energetic level would be to do smudge our entire house using the sacred white sage incense. I do this to Attract Good Luck for the Chinese New Year with Space Clearing.

What is the Chinese New Year?

The Chinese New Year is a Chinese festival that my family and I celebrate. It falls on the first day of the year on the lunar calendar that the Chinese use for festivals and religious events. This is why it is called the Chinese New Year.

Chinese New Year Begins in Spring

It is also called the Spring Festival. In ancient China, people welcome spring, and along with it new plantings, new beginnings and fresh starts. That is why it is good to do space clearing before the Chinese New Year.

The festival lasts up to 15 days in countries like China. In Singapore, the festival is celebrated for 2 working days.

During these days of celebration, my family and I would visit the homes of friends and relatives. We would greet and wish them a happy and prosperous new year. There will be exchange of mandarin oranges.

Children will be given red packets, called Hong Bao, with some money in them. This is given by adults to children, to wish them good fortune. These red packets can also be given by bosses to their employees, and adults to their elders.

What Are the 12 Chinese Astrological Signs?

In the western zodiac, there are 12 horoscopes. Each for every month in the Gregorian or Solar Calendar. For the Chinese, there are also 12 astrological signs. But instead of one for every month, we have one for every lunar year.

The 12 astrological signs are animals. There is a folk tale that explains how these 12 animals came to be named for each year. The story goes that the Jade Emperor had a race where 12 animals competed to see who would win. The animals in that race were the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.

As they completed the finish line, each animal would be given a year, according to the sequence they arrived. The rat won first place. And amazingly, 2020 will be the Year of the Metal Rat.

When is the Chinese New Year for 2020?

The first day of Chinese New Year of the Metal Rat will be on Saturday, 25 January 2020. The second day of Chinese New Year will be on Sunday, 26 January 2020. In Singapore, and many countries, since the second day is on a Sunday, the following Monday, 27 January 2020 will also be public holiday.

Traditionally, the Spring Festival lasts 15 days. While the public holidays are only at least 2 days in some countries, and more in other countries, the Chinese still observe the celebration of Chinese New Year for the first 15 days of the lunar new year.

During the 15 days, there are special occasions that are observed and celebrated. For example, the seventh (7th) day of the Chinese New Year is known as People’s Day. In Chinese, the meaning is that it is everyone’s day, and it is everyone’s birthday. Like a rebirth for the new year.

In Singapore, on that day, most Chinese enjoy a special dish called Raw Fish Salad. The Chinese word for ‘raw fish’ has the same sound as the Chinese word for ‘abundance’. For Chinese, the fish also represents abundance. So, eating this salad symbolizes the well wishes for everyone to have abundance for the Chinese New Year.

On the fifteenth (15th) day, the Chinese celebrate the last day of the Chinese New Year with a festival called Chap Goh Meh (or the fifteenth night). On this evening, families like mine would gather and have a feast. It is a time to be with family, and enjoy each other’s company.

Why You Should Do Space Clearing for the Chinese New Year?

Whether you are Chinese or not, you can still choose to do space clearing for the Chinese New Year. This is because the event happens to occur on the first day of the lunar new year. Regardless of being Chinese or not, this new lunar year will happen. It is simply just the time for it.

Everything is Energy

And another thing that I often say here is – Everything is energy.

With the dimension of time moving from one year to another, there are also energies shifting from one phase to another. Along with this shift, we have the opportunity to work with it, and do space clearing to remove all negative energies.

So, if you missed doing space clearing before the Gregorian or Solar new year, you can take this opportunity at this energy shift phase to do it. Even if you have done it earlier before the solar new year, you can do it again. I did it before 2020, and I will do it again before the Year of the Metal Rat arrives.

Spiritual Tip – Did space clearing before the 2020 New Year? You can do it again before the Chinese New Year of the Metal Rat.

When Should You Do Space Clearing for the Chinese New Year in 2020?

In Feng Shui, it is believed that there are auspicious dates for spring cleaning. These will be ideal dates to do space clearing too.

In addition, there are some Chinese Zodiac signs that may conflict with the auspicious dates. Take a look at the table below to see the auspicious dates and conflicting signs for the respective dates.

DateDayConflicting Zodiac Sign
6 January 2020MondayTiger
10 January 2020FridayHorse
12 January 2020SundayMonkey
13 January 2020MondayRooster
16 January 2020ThursdayRat
18 January 2020SaturdayTiger
19 January 2020SundayRabbit
20 January 2020MondayDragon
22 January 2020WednesdayHorse
24 January 2020FridayMonkey

For example, you decide to do spring cleaning and space clearing on Saturday, 18 January 2020, then make sure that you or anyone in your family is not of the Chinese Astrology sign that is Tiger.

If you decide to not follow Feng Shui, then just choose any date before 25 January 2020 to do your space clearing. Preferably do it on the 24 January 2020.

As for the time to do it, you can do it at any time. But I prefer to do it during the day, in the morning, after breakfast. The reason is there is a lot of prana (good spiritual energies) in the morning.

  1. Thank you so much for this article. Although I am aware of space clearing, I was unaware of the tradition of doing it before the Chinese New Year, My sister-in-law is Chinese so she will often buy everyone a moon cake to celebrate and sometimes we go to a show that features traditional Chinese dance.

My Chinese astrological sign the Rat. Can you tell me more about the sign? Can you tell me more about the Year of the Metal Rat?

    1. You’re welcome, Cynthia. Oh, it is a very traditional practice. When I was a child, I have seen my mother use another incense to do it. Today, because I learn from a shaman, I do it with sacred white sage.

Thanks for sharing your sign. Here is a link to know more about the Rat zodiac. There is a popular and famous Chinese Astrologer called Joey Yap. Here is a video of him explaining about the Year of the Metal Rat for your zodiac sign, the Rat.
