Create a Quiet and Cool Space

The first thing we are going to discuss is your meditation space. Ideally, the room where you are going to meditate should be quiet and cool.

If you live in a city where the weather is cool most of the year, then that is great. Simply make sure that the environment is quiet too.

In tropical countries like Singapore, during the warm months, an air-conditioned room is best. At the same time, this will shut out noise, and maintain an even temperature.

This is the same for any place that is warm or has hot seasons.

No Interruptions, Please

No Interruptions - Do Not Disturb

Next is to ensure that you get uninterrupted time during the meditation.

Inform everyone in your home that you will be meditating, and not to disturb you during the session. Then lock the door to the room where you are going to meditate.

If you have a landline phone, unplug it. Switch off your mobile phone or turn it to silent mode.

If there is anything else that can cause an interruption or noise, turn it off.

Minimize the Furnishings in the Room

Not all of us have the luxury of an entire room available to be made into a meditation room. So, this suggestion to have as little furnishings in the room as possible is just exactly that. Just a suggestion.

If you can, meditate in a room with as little furniture and furnishings as possible. Do not have any statues in the room. Also, do not have any altar in the room, too.

Minimal Furnishing for Better Meditation

The goal of meditation is to go inwards. If you direct your attention to a statue of altar, it is contrary to this goal. It is known that Bodhidarma meditated for nine years facing a blank wall. If he can meditate without focusing on any thing, so can you.

Wear Light and Comfortable Clothes

Meditate in comfortable clothing

Be very comfortable when you meditate. This includes clothing.

Do not wear anything restricting such as brassiere or belts. Wear clothing that is comfortable and cooling.

Pyjamas is a good option for meditation attire. Another choice is loose shorts and t-shirt. One of the reasons is by being comfortable, you can enjoy a better meditation session. And it is easier to get into deep meditation.

Another reason is the understanding of internal energies. The Chinese call it Chi. When you meditate, you are relaxed, and your internal energies can flow smoothly. You do not want this energy flow to be restricted or blocked by tight clothing.

When you allow the energies to flow, you will enjoy all the benefits that meditation can offer.

The Best Hours to Meditate

Ideally, the best hours to meditate are in the morning and late at night.

For morning, the best time is 4 am.  After waking, brush your teeth and wash your face.  Consume a very light meal or nutritional beverage to fend off hunger pangs (only if you wish to). Personally, I do not eat anything, and I meditate on an empty stomach.

Best time to meditate

DO NOT indulge in a full breakfast before meditation. Having a full tummy can affect your meditation, and make it ineffectual.

If you are a beginner at meditation, it is suggested that you wake up half an hour before 4 am. Do some simple free motion exercises to start getting your energies flowing. Then meditate.

For late at night, the best time is before you go to sleep, and at least 2 hours after meal.

In truth, one could meditate any time of the day. During the weekends, when I am at home, I would meditate in the afternoons too.

How Long Should a Meditation Session Last?

As a beginner, you should start meditating for at least 10 minutes per session. Do this for one week or more until you are quite comfortable with it.

When you find you are meditating well for 10 minutes, then increase the session to 15 minutes. Again, do this for a week or more. Every time you find you are meditating well, increase another 5 minutes.

Continue to increase by 5 minutes until you reach half an hour. When you can meditate for half an hour, do it for about six months.

Eventually, your goal is to meditate for one hour or more. Of course, this is all up to the individual, and also depending on the available time a person has.

Still, even if you are hard pressed for time, it is good to dedicate at least half an hour or one hour to meditation. This is the optimum time for best results. And if you really do not have enough time, then even 10 minutes meditation is better than not meditating at all.

How Frequent Should You Meditate?

As mentioned above, you should meditate at least once a day. Twice a day is very good. If possible, more than twice a day is super.

Do not allocate meditation to only once, twice, 3 or 5 times a week. Meditation should be practiced daily.

When you are traveling, you can practice meditation in your hotel room. I do that whenever I am traveling. For example, when I travelled to Hong Kong for my lecture assignment by the university where I teach, I still find time to meditate in the hotel room. The experience of meditating in another country, and connecting with another land’s energies is wondrous.

Meditation Tip – Wherever you meditate, especially in a foreign land, surround yourself with White Divine Light for protection before you meditate.

While I teach that you should meditate every day, do not be too hard on yourself if you missed a day or two due to a busy schedule. It has happened to me too. Just continue meditating when you can.

What is the Best Posture for Meditation?

Meditate in Semi Lotus Position

The ideal posture is the semi-lotus position. This is a posture where you sit with your legs bent at the knee, and the right leg resting on the left leg. Like doing a cross-legged posture but you do not cross your legs. You place the right leg over the left leg.

Alternatively, if for health reasons, you cannot do the semi-lotus position, you can be seated on a chair. Find a comfortable chair. Sit on it as you would normally sit on a chair. Place both your feet on the floor firmly. You can rest your arms on your lap.

Meditation Tip – Chair without arm rests is preferable

If the above two choices are not what you like, you can also sit cross-legged. But this may cause numbness in the legs after a while. Therefore, crossing one’s legs is not advisable.

Meditation is all about doing work with the mind. As such, the body should be as comfortable as possible. And yet, not too comfortable until you fall asleep.

Meditation tip – If you have a cushion, it is good to place it under your buttocks. This supports your posture and helps you to keep your spine erect, which is very good posture for meditation

If you are meditating on your bed, it is also all right. But the bed should not be too soft. You can use a pillow to rest between your back and the bedstead, too. When you meditate on the bed, you can straighten your legs. Most importantly, do not be too comfortable until you fall asleep.

But then again, if you fall asleep, do not be too hard on yourself. Just prepare to meditate again for the next session, and do better.

The most important point to note about posture is to keep your back as straight as possible, with the crown of your head pointing to the sky or ceiling. The neck should be straight with the eyes looking straight ahead. And the head should be erect.

Shut your eyes gently. Close your mouth with lips gently touching each other. Basically, just shut your eyes and close your mouth as you normally would.

Then take a deep breath in. Hold it as long as you can. And as you exhale, allow the muscles of your body to relax.

My Recommended Meditation Practice

There are many types of meditation such as Insight Meditation, Guided Meditation, Walking Meditation and many more. If you like simple meditation practice, you can try Breath Meditation.

The best meditation that I recommend is the Flowing Love Meditation. It is a meditation that I channeled from my Spirit Guide.

It should also be noted that what I have shared in this video are just suggested conditions. As mentioned, these are very good for beginners. An experienced person can actually meditate in any situation.

For example, I can meditate in a noisy train filled with people. Even then, I still prefer to meditate in my own meditation space with ideal conditions because it truly helps.

If you need to practice meditation, then try the Flowing Love Meditation. You can start with the one that has 10 minutes silence. And progress to one hour silence.

And if you have any questions about what are the Essential Ideal Conditions to Enjoy a Wonderful Meditation Practice, please write it as a comment. I will be happy to help you.

I will be sharing more about spiritual experiences, meditation and meditation related topics in future videos and blog posts. Remember to join the Flowing Love Meditation community to be updated whenever I publish a new video or blog post.

I wish you good health, wealth and love.

4 am is a very good time to meditate. But if you are unable to do that, just wake a little earlier than your normal waking hour, and meditate then.

After you have meditated for a while, please do come back and let me know how it turned out for you?

  4. This is great information and I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I had been wondering where the best place would be to meditate and you have managed to answer that here . I have a spare bedroom that has a bed in it but really nothing else and I feel I could use this space to help me with my meditation. I have six dogs so sometimes trying to find a quiet place away is not so easy. I think my room will be perfect.

    1. You’re welcome, Dena. 🙂
Yes, the spare room sounds perfect. You can meditate on the bed. Place a soft cushion under your buttocks for gentle support.

I have heard of dogs and cats that become quiet when their parents meditate. So, don’t be surprised when your dogs join you for the session. hehe 🙂
